OneMap Challenge 2012 Feature App: OMG! It is the OneMap Game
For the next few weekends, TeamOneMap will be featuring some of the web and mobile applications from the inaugural OneMap Challenge 2012! This week, we are going to introduce you to the web app: OMG! It is the OneMap Game! (http://www.bbxqq.com/OMG/OMG/)
OMG is a map based game created for children. This game is pretty simple and it is based on everyone's favourite childhood game of "connecting dots". Do you remember when you were young, you were fascinated by book activities that asked you to join all the dots together based on numbers? Or sometimes you need to use your imagination without the help of any numbers to join dots together to form an image of something? Well, this game is built on this idea but with a refreshing twist!
Let's take a look at how it works!
You will see different categories of games (Parks, Gardens, Nature Reserves etc) beside the OneMap base map when you are at the OMG webpage.
In this example, we selected the Parks category.
Some simple questions will flash out on the right of the categories. You need to, according to the order of the questions, click on the correct location to answer them. So, the 1st question says "You can see Malaysia from this park." You need to guess and click on the correct icon on the map. If your answer is correct (in this case, the park is Sembawang Park), a star will appear together with a small call-out of the park name.
Subsequently, if you answer the 2nd question correctly by clicking on the correct location on the map, a line will be drawn from the 1st point to the 2nd one.
However, at any point in time if you get the wrong answer, no connecting line will be drawn and you need to reselect another location as your answer.
Answer all the questions from each category and there will be a surprise image and shape revealed.
Of course, this seems far too easy for adults because the real intention of this game is to let children play with it! :) Parents can facilitate this game by reading out the questions and the kids would have to guess the correct locations of the questions asked. Now that is something really new... parent-child bonding time by playing a map-based game! At the same time, the child can learn more about Singapore! The shapes do not exactly depict the animal or object but this is intentional to allow the child to creatively associate shapes with other types of images.
At the moment, there are only 7 categories of games to play but we are sure more will be added in in the near future! :)
That's all for this episode of OneMap Challenge 2012 feature app. Be sure to look out for the next one next weekend.
