Singapore's Longest Landmarks!

Posted by OneMap | Monday, January 24, 2011 | Category: , , |

TeamOneMap's "spatial sense" is constantly activated whenever we are reading for news that can be related to OneMap. A particular post in Yahoo! Singapore News caught the eyes and interest of the team... "Singapore's 'Longest' Landmarks".

Hmm... Let's do a search where all these unique landmarks are! But some of these seem too familiar to most Singaporeans, for example, Marina Bay Sand's Skypark pool bags the longest pool award while the Kallang River is known for being the longest river in Singapore.

However, an amazing statistic left the team with "Wow... the building is that old?" - The Arts House at the Old Parliament. Sir Stamford Raffles actually ordered the building to be constructed... and the building is still standing right now! Read this post to find out the actual year it was built.

"I bet this must be a building under the monuments theme in OneMap!" someone exclaimed.

"Aiyo... of course lah!" the rest of the team kinda expected it.

But seeing is believing, let us see if our assumptions are right!

The whole team gathered at a desk and someone typed 'The Arts House' and the system immediately popped up the full place name - The Art House at the Old Parliament.

Pressing the enter button zooms the map to the location.

The moment of truth came when we navigated to the Culture - Monument Theme...

Upon clicking on it, we got an icon extremely close to the arts house... and bingo! Yes, this building is listed as a monument in OneMap!

You can try and identify each of the monuments available on this layer and what's more, there are additional short information to these monuments :)

Perhaps school teachers can also make use of OneMap and plan a History excursion to learn more about the old buildings in Singapore!

And remember, you only get this on OneMap, yeah!
